Review
Snowpiercer is a movie I put off watching for a long time and after finishing it I wish I would have just left it un-watched. When a director takes a chance at a high concept sci-fi movie my interest is always peaked because there are so many that are complete trash and when they are good they are often overlooked by the general public. Snowpiercer, however, was not overlooked (even spawned a television show) by general audiences which to its credit you have to respect.
As far respect goes for the movie itself I do not feel it deserves any. It is both gorgeous looking and filled with a lot of action but that does not make up for the fact that its concept starts to fold in on itself by the 3/4 mark. The social issues Snowpiercer juggles with are very pertinent to our current time yet whenever something interesting is brought up the movie immediately moves on to the next idea. No time is given to any of the interesting world building hooks they obviously put a lot of work into.
I feel like I do need to mention that Chris Evans is the lead protagonist and he truly does put in work selling his character, he outshines every other actor/actress in Snowpiercer. What truly breaks this move though is the ending. Its great when a well structured movie elicits the “WHAT” response in its last moments, Snowpiercers “WHAT” moment is so monumentally stupid it will leave you frustrated that you wasted the time to slog through the last 1/4 of the movies run time.
